Patient Library Information
Civil Hospital Library: Reading materials include over 40 popular and timely journals for leisure and education. We also provide a daily newspaper, a non-circulating reference section and a circulating collection of over 6,000 books that includes Spanish language, GED manuals and large-print.
Audiovisual equipment such as a television, VCR, DVD player and personal stereos are available for individual and group use. In addition, the Library maintains a collection of over 200 music CDs, and a video collection of over 200 tapes/dvds for both recreational and therapeutic purposes.
We have 3 patient-dedicated computers programmed with word processors, graphics arts programs, typing tutorials, and challenging games such as chess and Mah-jong. One-on-one computer usage tutorials are available to the patients upon request.
Forensic Program: Access is available to many Civil Hospital Library resources through their Rehabilitation Department representative or other unit staff. In addition, the Forensic Rehabilitation Department offers a small on-unit collection of books and current magazines.
Patient Circulation Policy: Patients are allowed to check out 2 books at a time for a 2-week period. Staff are permitted to check out audiovisual materials on the patient's behalf for a 1-week period.
Professional Library Resources
The Professional Library has medical book holdings in excess of 4,000 volumes. In addition, we actively subscribe to a number of excellent health-related periodicals.
The Library is also a depository of information about the history of the Arizona State Hospital, including annual reports back to the 1930s.
We offer literature searches and document retrieval services to our hospital staff through a reciprocal agreement with other hospitals and clinics throughout the United States, its territories and Canada. In return, our Library is able to fulfill an average of 25 article requests per month from outside health facilities.
Employee Circulation Policy: All hospital staff and Arizona Department of Health Services employees may check out books from our circulating collection for two weeks; audiovisual materials for one week. Our journals collection does not circulate; however, we do provide photocopy services.
